The Dutch introduced Arabica coffee to Indonesia in 1696 when the governor of Malabar in India sent a seedling to his counter part in Jakarta (than Batavia). The first seedlings failed in a flood but a later shipment in 1699 flourished and exports were sent to Europe by the Dutch East India Company in 1711. Today Indonesia has a great deal to offer with more than 18,000 islands in the archipelago giving vast varieties of flavours but only the larger islands have the high altitudes needed for growing Arabica coffee such as Java making it one of the main growing islands.
